On Friday, April 24, 2026, the WindsorEssex Community Foundation joined the City of Windsor and the Emancipation Celebration Monument Committee to unveil designs for the new Emancipation Celebration Monument at Jackson Park and introduce the Emancipation Celebration Fund.
The Fund, held at WECF, supports the ongoing development of this important project honouring Black Canadian history and Jackson Park’s legacy as a historic site of Emancipation Day celebrations.
The first phase of the monument, supported by an over $400,000 investment from City Council through the City of Windsor’s 2026 Budget, is expected to be completed by the end of July 2026. A second phase will include enhancements to the monument and the addition of a life-sized bronze sculpture of Walter “Mr. Emancipation” Perry, planned for 2027 or sooner, subject to meeting a community fundraising goal.
Donations to the Emancipation Celebration Fund will directly support these next steps and help bring the full vision to life. Every contribution will help enhance the monument, expand the surrounding space, and ensure this important legacy is preserved for future generations.
WindsorEssex Community Foundation is proud to serve as steward of the Emancipation Celebration Fund in partnership with the City of Windsor and the Committee.
With your support, this project will reflect the history, resilience, and spirit of Windsor & Essex County.
